MAIDEN FLIGHT
Fill To Have New Test
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) FORT WORTH (Texas),
December 22.
The brand-new faster-than-sound Fill fighter-bomber that Australia has ordered for the R.A.A.F. will fly again before the New Year after yesterday's maiden flight, cut short by flap trouble.
A spokesman for General Dynamics, which won the controversial contract to build the powerful jet aircraft, said a malfunction in the wing flaps had caused the test pilot to keep the speed down to 230 miles an hour, compared with the nearly 2000 miles an hour for which it was designed. Flaps apart, the spokesman said, the aircraft performed “as well as had been expected.” Captain Donald C. Davis, supervisor of the project, said: “It sure looked wonderful.” The Chief of the Australian Air Staff, Air Marshal Sir Valston Hancock, watched today’s flight.
