INVERCARGILL, Dec. 21. Brian Allan Tetley, aged 20, labourer, and James Paul Gable Clark, aged 25, appeared before Mr W. M. Willis, S.M., today on charges of breaking and entering the Invercargill departmental store of H. and J. Smith, Ltd., and stealing clothing, watches, transistor radios and tape recorders worth £lBOO early yesterday morning. Both admitted the charge. A further charge of converting a £9OO car from Invercargill on the same day was withdrawn by the police after the accused had elected trial by jury. They both denied the charge. Detective-Sergeant T. R. Tyson said a woman tenant in a flat was disturbed by the sound of a car about 4.30 a.m. yesterday. The car was parked in an alleyway. The woman noticed a man walk into a yard. “She had been disturbed by prowlers before, so she rang the police,” Mr Tyson said.
The police surrounded the building. A systematic search of Smith’s premises failed to And any sign of intruders. Just as the search was ending, a man was sighted on the roof of the store.
Clark was apprehended, and seven suitcases containing the stolen property were discovered.
Tetley was later interviewed by a detective at a private house. The Magistrate remanded Tetley under section 37 of the Mental Health Act at the request of his counsel, Mr J. S. Toomey. Clark was remanded in custody until Wednesday for a probation officer’s report.
