Fast First-Up Mile

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Dec. 21

A 19-year-old university student is being hailed as a potential world-beater after only one race over a mile. He is R. Doubell, who on Saturday, in an inter-club match, ran the mile in 4min llsec. Doubell had not previously run a race longer than 880 yards. His coach, Franz Stamphel, said: “That’s the fastest first-up mile I’ve ever seen. The performance was even more amazing when you realise Doubell’s training programme over the last three months has been interrupted by injuries and university examinations.”
