HEATHCOTE WATER

“Misleading” Reports

Statements made at last week’s meeting of the Heathcote County Council about the purity of water supplied to the county by the Lyttelton Borough Council were unfortunate and misleading, it was alleged at a meeting of the borough council last evening. A councillor had claimed at the Heathcote council meeting that water through the domestic supply in Heathcote Valley was at times jet black.

Cr. E. A. Camfield, chairman of the Lyttelton council’s water committee, suggested that representatives of the Heathcote council should be invited to meet a delegation from Lyttelton. “We could then explain what work we have in hand,” he said. “Much of this unfortunate publicity has been stating things that are not always true.” Cr R. H. Duff agreed and said some of the statements were exaggerated. “They can create a bad impression,” said the Mayor (Mr J. B. Collett). Cr N. D. Parratt said he had instructed the council’s consulting engineers to draw up plans and prepare estimates for a new settling tank to be installed in two stages.
