ANTARCTIC PARTY

Cerebral Palsy Pupils

Even if Christmas did not bring snow and reindeer for the children at the Christchurch Cerebral Palsy School, it brought the next best thing—snow and penguins.

The United States Antarctic force sent a bus to take 30 children and 10 staff members to the base at Harewood. A truck was also provided to carry wheelchairs. The commander of the force (Rear-Admiral J. R. Reedy) greeted the children at the chapel, which also serves as a hall. Lieutenant-Commander C. Roberts, officer in charge of the Christchurch detachment of Air Development Squadron VX6, who arranged the outing, then had films screened—three cartoons and the documentary on Antarctica.

Lunch was served, and Father Christmas arrived to give each child a parcel containing several presents. The children inspected various aircraft used for Antarctic operations. On departing each child was presented with a souvenir booklet on Antarctica, bags of sweets and nuts, and photographs of penguins.
