Apprenticeship Studied

The commission of inquiry into vocational training, including apprenticeship would begin holding hearings about midFebruary next year, the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) said tonight.

In a prepared statement, Mr Shand said the commission would visit Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin and would hold hearings in Wellington. The members of the commission were Sir Arthur Tyndall (chairman) and Messrs

H. L. Bockett, G. W. Fairweather, J. A. Neale, F. L. Langley, E. W. Mills and W. E. Wagener. The terms of reference of the commission were to inquire into the report and make recommendations on (1) Vocational training at all levels in industry and commerce— (other than farming), including apprenticeship and technician training, but excluding professional training except to the extent that there was any overlap between it and technician training. (2) The need for change, expansion, or new developments in vocational training, having regard to the estimated growth of population in at least the next 25 years, to the economic

development of New Zealand, and to such other matters as may seem to the commission to be relevant. (3) The form of any legislation that might be necessary to put into effect proposals arising from the foregoing. (4) Such other matters as may be brought to the notice of the commission or initiated by it as may be deemed by it to be relevant to its functions as defined in the preceding three terms.
