Search For Copper In New Guinea
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PORT MORESBY, December 21.
The search for copper in Papua-New Guinea is being intensified by the firm of Cons Zinc Rio Tinto, Ltd.
The company has been granted special authority by the territory’s administration
to prospect for copper over 2000 square mile of Bougainville Island —about two-thirds of the island.
Prospecting will start inland from the town of Kieta, on the south-east coast of Bougainville. Before the Second World War copper mines were operated inland from Kieta. The company began prospecting for copper on parts of Bougainville about a year ago. Mining officials in Port Moresby said the new interest apparently stemmed from the precarious position of copper in Australia at present. So far there has been no encouraging sign that copper will be found in any large quantities on Bougainville. If the early search proved to be encouraging the company was expected to ask for exclusive rights on Bougainville.
