57 Die, 34 Injured (X.Z. PA.-Reuter—Copyright) LIMA (Peru), Dec. 21. Fifty-seven miners died and 34 were injured in Peru's worst mining disaster when escaping methane gas caused an explosion near Cerro de Pasco city, about 200 miles north-east Of Lima, high in the Andes mountains.

Rescue teams worked throughout yesterday to bring out bodies and miners trapped hundreds of feet below ground. A spokesman of the American owners, Cerro de Pasco Corporation, said 34 miners were brought safely to the surface and 23 bodies were still to be recovered. The mine is about 16,000 ft above sea level.
