The Road Toll
Sir.—Today’s news reports 401 killed on the roads this year. The Government, if it had the guts to do it, could stop the senseless slaughter overnight. Put a minimum fine of £5OO for speed hogs, and £750 minimum fine for drunken drivers and lose the licences for life. Tickle their pockets, as it is the only thing that many understand today. A fine of £1 and 30s costs is just a farce. Get tough and let them see that they meant it. Never mind about losing a few votes. The hospitals would be relieved of a lot of unnecessary work.—Yours, etc., BY THE WAYSIDE. December 18, 1964.
