47 WHALES
“Prospects Not Bright”

BLENHEIM, Dec. 21
Whaling operations were too slow and the prospects- not at all bright, Mr G. T. Perano, a principal of the Tory Channel Whaling Company, said today. Only 17 whales have been caught since November 19, and the yield for the season up to today, 47, has not given the future any glowing prospects.
The ship Orca will tie up for a few days over Christmas and operations will be resumed as soon as conditions permit. A further drop in world oil prices since the company sold its last seasons production had also affected the industry, Mr Perano said.
Among the recent catches have been four bryde whales, a fin back type, very low in oil yield. About four tons was expected from the lot, but each of the 50-foot whales has a high proportion of meat.
