PENSIONER MOVES IN

First In New Flats The chairman of the Waimairi County Council (Mr J. I. Colligan) on Friday formally handed over a key to Mrs E. I. Eaton, the first of 24 pensioners to occupy the latest additions to the council’s pensioner housing programme. He wished Mrs Eaton a long life and hoped that she would enjoy living in her flat, which is situated in Palliser place, a service cul-de-sac off Raleigh street, Bishopdale. The County Clerk (Mr K. Maclachlan) and the county health inspector (Mr R. H. Gee) were also present at the function. The new flats, which will bring the total to 36, are in two blocks of six and three of four. During the weekend pensioners will move into the other five flats comprising the block in which Mrs Eaton lives. The next six will be available for occupation from December 24, and the rest towards the end of January. Originally Palliser place was to be called Eaton place, but since there already was such a street in Christchurch it was named after Mrs M. Palliser, who will be the second resident there. The council has now received approval of the Health Department and Local Authorities Loans Board for the erection of a further 56 flats in Bowen street, Upper Riccarton. These will cost £102,000, of which £58,000 will be found in local money and £44,000 in Government subsidy.
