NEW STEEL INDUSTRY
More Use Of Railways (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. Within a few years of the establishment of an iron and steel industry south of Auckland, the Government would be receiving substantial sums in royalties for ironsands—a previously untapped natural resource, said the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) today. He said the royalties would be a net gain to the Government. The Minister said the industry would also become one of the biggest users of the railways. “If full use were made of the railways for the transport of raw materials and finished products, the railways—within 10 years—could be carrying 850,000 tons a year for the steel industry.” Mr Marshall said the industry would not only be an important contribution to the development of New Zealand, but would be the basis for further industrial development for a wide variety of uses for iron and steel. He said initially the industry would employ about 850 persons. This number would increase progressively to about 1800.
