MEN’S SOFTBALL Deep Freeze Turns Tables On Richmond

The leading team, Richmond, was beaten by Deep Freeze in an exciting game In the men's softball senior competition. Avon won over Papanui by a surprisingly large margin after it had batted in early runs in a quite out of character performance. Papanui made a customary last innings batting effort but could not force a major breach in the Avon fielding. Results:—Avon 8, Papanui 5; Deep Freeze 6, Richmond 4. Second section: Spreydon 14, Suburbs 8; United 13, Kaiapol 7. Points,—Deep Freeze 2, Richmond. Avon and Papanui 1. Second section: Spreydon 2, United and Suburbs 0. Deep Freeze v. Richmond Deep Freeze opened with WIN lard as pitcher and the wiles of this fine pitcher never ceased to plague the Richmond batters. Away with customary alacrity, Richmond scored three runs from Woods. Hall and Morel on a Morel home run.

Deep Freeze ripped Into the Richmond attack right from the first batter. Scales, Thornsley and Hunter all scored runs in a bright frame of fast running. Neither team scored in the second innings and Richmond lost the initiative. The Canterbury catcher D. Mullen, tied the score for Deep Freeze with an intelligent run. Thornsley and Hunter both scored on a sweetly struck liner from Richards. Well home under an erratic throw from Woods in the outfield, Richards made it four for the Inning and a total so far of seven. The three Negro players In

the American side, Hunter at short-stop. Scales at third and Richards the catcher were all playing good games for Deep Freeze. Scales moved with Incredible quickness to snap up a Hall bunt on the first bounce, overtake Hall on the basepaths, and throw him out. Richmond was wrangling and arguing with quite unnecessary frequency as the tension mounted and chances of runs seemed more and more remote. Given a chance to score runs with Woods and Joyce on base Richmond was given the taste of some O’Connor pitching that beat Otago last week to win the Jeffries Cup and meekly went out. Avon v. Papanui

Avon realised the promise of last season for the first time with a confident win over Papanui. Papanui never seemed to get going and after Avon had scored four runs in the first Papanui took quite a while to recover from the setback. B. Chee hit two home runs in a bright game but the rest of the Papanui team played almost in a trance with the late inning runs coming, but

: not with the deliberation that is the Papanui hallmark. A Ballantyne pitched well for i Avon, R. McKenzie played another good game at short-stop i and batted well. I Bridgeman, very much the • general in centre field, showed I the easy way to play top class softball, and inspired the I younger team members to a ’ comforting victory.

Results: Second Grade.—Papanui 8, Spreydon 6; Suburbs 8, Richmond 6; Avon 14, Hollywood 9. Third Grade.—Templeton 38, Linwood League 5; Avon 7, Teachers’ College 0; United 7, Papanui 1.
