Picket, Charlborough Win Greymouth Double

(From Our Own Reporter!

GREYMOUTH, December 20.

The double on the first day of the Greymouth Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting at Omoto yesterday was won by Picket and Charlborough, both of which are raced by Greymouth owners.

Picket is held on lease by Mr S. W. Gillman and trained by him at Omoto. and Charlborough is owned by Mr H. Morgan and trained for him at Riccarton by R. E. Taggart. The combination paid a doubles dividend of £2l for £l. The on-course double won by His Host and Cleopatra returned £195 6s for £l.

The meeting was held in fine warm weather but the attendance was disappointing. This was reflected in the small on-course totalisator turn-over of £7718 including £929 10s on the double. That the track was in excellent order was revealed by the fast times recorded, more especially in the final event, the Divorce Handicap. The winner, Rae’s Hope, covered the distance in Imin 25sec, a track record. The odds on favourite and top-weight, Page Boy, was responsible for this as he set a scorching pace from the start and it was only in the final stages that he was run down by the Totara Flat stablemates, Rae’s Hope and Totara Lad. Morris Francis and Picket were the first to show out in the Dalray Handicap, but with a rnile to run Picket had drawn clear of Morris Francis, Gold Find, Shanty Town, Marlow and Silver Kingdom. There was little alteration. in the order passing the stand and down the back. Picket was first to turn for home and in a desperate finish he just held off the strong challenge of Morris Francis by a nose.

Marlow was half a length away third and a length in front of Silver Kingdom. Shanty Town was a further length and a half back with Gold Find. Corneil and Sirtax raced together in the lead in the early stages of the Royal Vai Hack Handicap, with Prince Callan, Ben Blue, Charlborough and Glemmist following in that order. With a mile to run Charlborough was taken to the front and passing the post the first time he had Sirtax, Cornell, Ben Blue. Prince Callan and Glenmist as his nearest attendants.

Charlborough continued to gallop freely along the back and he turned for home three or four lengths ahead of Sirtax and Corneil. The leader increased his advantage in the run home to win by five lengths. Sirtax was second, a length clear of the fast finishing Glenmist, which beat Prince Callan by half a. head for third. Ben Blue and Corneil were beaten off. Results: ROYAL TOR HACK HANDICAP, £170: 7f. 3 2 HIS HOST (5) 7-9 D. N. Hadfield 1 1/1 FILSPAR (1) 8-7 A. J. Stokes 2 6 4 VIVIEN ROBE 8-4 car. 8-1 J. A.
