RACING Trial Offer Wins In Record Time

"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Dec. 20. It had seemed more than probable that the Waipa Turf Plate at Te Awamutu yesterday would be between Trial Offer and Sobig. Many bettors chose Trial Offer, but few could have anticipated her win by three lengths over the colt. As has been his habit lately, Sobig set out in front straight away. Trial Offer trailed him closely for a bit but with half the mile course covered Sobig was hammering along two and a half lengths in front. It seemed he was on the way to another end-to-end win, but Trial Offer collared him before the straight and in the run home she streaked away to win on the bit. As well as having the weight-for-age event to herself over the last furlong, Trial Offer returned a winning gallop of Imin 36 3-ssec —two-fifths of a second inside Even Stevens’ race record.

A grey from Hawera, Trial Offer has now won four times in succession, her latest success coming after victories in tne New Zealand Oaks, New Zealand Derby and the Desert Gold Stakes. At Riccarton none of the three-year-olds were in her class. Judged by the manner in which she disposed of Sobig, she might be the best filly for a good many years. No Bids Made

Trial Offer did not raise a bid when put up for auction as a two-year-old. Her owners, Messrs C. W. Berry and B. Hayter, took her on a lease and recently exercised a right of purchase for 1000 guineas. Already this season they have won £5595 with her in stakes. Sobig and Trial Offer ran the legs off their older opponents over the first half-mile. Aro, High Mark, and Fair Tiger, especially, were soon well behind, but each came home solidly, looking alto■gether in great shape for their big staying assignments at the Auckland summer meeting.

Aro finished fourth, Fair Tiger seventh, and High Mark eighth.

Sobig was a warm favourite, both on and off the course, and Trial Offer was 3/3. Of the £21,177 win and plaae bets on the race, Trial Offer carried £3376, and her dividends were £5 5s and £1 14s. In the x>n-

course double with Zarabee (Otorohanga Hack Handicap; she returned £33 16s 6d

Mantovani. Trial Oller, and Sobig were first out tn the Turf Plate. Rochdale lost ground and so did Gold Chick and Queenwood.

Sobig and Trial Offer shared the lead into the first bend, a length and a halt ahead of Mautovanl, Tatua. and Blyton. which were grouped clear of Rochdale, Aro and Don Palatine.

Sobig Takes Lead Sobig shaded Trial Offer after two furlongs and went ahead at the half-mile by a couple of lengths. With three furlongs to run he was out by two and a half lengths from Trial Offer, which had a length and a half on Blyton, Tatua, Mantovani and Misere. There was a further gap to Rochdale, Aro and the rest, which were strung out

On the turn into the straight Trial Offer closed on Sobig. Once in the run home she dashed ahead, and she continued to gallop very strongly until the finish. Sobig kept second easily from Tatua, which had two lengths on Aro Two lengths further back Kay Fllou was fifth, followed by Blyton. Fair Tiger, High Mark, Mantovani, and Gold Chick.

Water Waggon's Pace Water Waggon rounded off a Te Kapa double with Yardstick and became one ot the bestregarded Railway Handicap chances with his win in the Flying Handicap. None could match Water Waggon's pace. He was clear in front from start to finish.

Water Waggon was an exceptional two-year-old, and it seems he might become as outstanding as a three-year-old this season. The Flying Handicap was his third race since he resumed after a spell. The next might be the Newmarket Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday, although it is just as likely that he will be reserved for the Railway on New Year's Day. Yardstick's win came in the Te Awamutu Cup over 20 opponents. It was the second success on end. and suggested he will have to be taken into account for the big middle-dis-tance handicaps during the Auckland summer meeting. Two starts back Yardstick won the South Auckland Cup at Pukekohe, and he finished second the time before tn lhe Hamilton Centennial Gold Cup. Although not in the Auckland Cup he was freely nominated for the other handicap eventa at Ellerslie. Results:
