GERRARD, MISS BENTLEY WIN
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 20. L. A. Gerrard and Miss Rita Bentley today became the Wellington singles tennis champions for 1964-65, but both had to stretch to the very limit to overcome determined opponents, R. G. Clarke and Mrs Ruia Davy.
Gerrard beat Clarke, 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, and Miss Bentley beat Mrs Davy, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Gerrard and R. N. Hawkes won the men’s doubles from Clarke and J. B. Souter, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, and Mesdames Davy and E. Stephan beat Misses Bentley and B. Vercoe 7-5, 6-1 to take the women’s doubles.
In the singles semi-finals Gerrard comfortably beat Souter, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4, and Clarke upset Hawkes in a gruelling match 1-6, 6-3, 8-6, 5-7, 64.
Miss Bentley was untroubled to beat Miss E Terry, 6-1, 6-3. Mrs Davy gave a 6-0, 6-2 tennis lesson to Miss J. Hayvice, of Wellington.
Leg Injuries.—When his bicycle and a car collided in Hereford street early on Saturday afternoon, John Waters, of Martin avenue, Beckenham, suffered leg injuries. He was treated at the Christchurch Hospital.
