Women’s Tennis Team

(N.Z. Press Association)

Mrs Davy, now living in Christchurch, is New Zealand’s most experienced woman player. Aged 27, she has been five times national champion, first in 1957 and and last in 1963. She has also won the doubles six times and the mixed once. New Zealand junior champion in 1955, Mrs Davy was a member of a New Zealand team in Australia in 1956. Since then she has made four trips to Britain and the Continent and has twice reached the last 16 at Wimbledon as well as gaining successes in other tournaments. In the New Year honours of 1960 she was awarded the M.B.E.

Ranked second in the Dominion to Miss J. Davidson at the end of last season, the 19-year-old Miss Terry, formerly of Waikato but now of Auckland, has been New Zealand junior champion for three years in succession and she has won the junior doubles two years in succession. In mid-1962, Miss Terry made a private visit to Britain at the same time as the official New Zealand women’s team and she reached the final of the junior Wimbledon where she was beaten by the Russian girl, Miss G. Baksheeva. Last season, Miss Terry won the North Island singles title.

WELLINGTON, December 20. Mrs Ruia Davy, formerly Miss Morrison, and Miss Elizabeth Terry will represent New Zealand in the International Federation Cup—the women’s tennis equivalent of the Davis Cup —in Australia next month. Miss Terry has been preferred to Mrs E. Stephan, whose ability as a doubles player makes her one of the top women in the country. The team was announced today. In two trial singles matches played in conjunction with the Wellington championships, Mrs Stephan beat Mrs E. Mitchell 7-5, 6-3, and Miss Terry beat Mrs Mitchell, 6-3, 6-3.
