SYDNEY, Dec. 20.
R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, and the Australian Bruce Devlin have won the final of the world’s richest television golf series—the £40,000 Columbia Broadcasting System match play classic, the Sydney “Daily Telegraph” said on Saturday. The “Daily Telegraph” said news of the secret tournament series, which was filmed in November for television broadcasts throughout the world, reached Sydney on Friday. The win, at California’s La Quenta Country Club, was worth £9OOO each to Charles and Devlin.
The “Daily Telegraph” said Charles and Devlin eclipsed the world’s best golfers in winning four matches to capture the four-ball match-play series.
They beat the Americans, Tony Lerna and Bobby Nichols. 8 and 7, finishing nineteen shots under par, according to the “Daily Telegraph.”
The series was limited to the world’s top 32 players, and included Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.
