EXCITED TOO SOON

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Dec. 20. Jubilation turned to consternation in the starting box of the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club yesterday morning when the 35ft sloop Wakarere, carrying the Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) was found to be well back in the fleet in the Cook Strait keeler race. When tied in with starting times, early reports from the finishing line in Tory Channel put the Wakarere at the head of the fleet by about six minutes. A later discovery of a

minor error, however, showed that the vice-regal sloop was well back in the fleet. Sir Bernard Fergusson had a cheerful word for the large crowd which gathered at Picton just after nine o’clock yesterday morning to meet him as he stepped ashore after the race. The race started about 1 a.m. on Friday and the crossing was made in 5| hours. Sir Bernard Fergusson is reported to have slept for much of the journey but was out and about when the sloop neared the channel.
