ADELAIDE, December 20.
Pakistan, led by its opener, Mohammad Ilyas, thrashed the South Australian bowling to finish with 421 for six at the end of the second day’s play at Adelaide yesterday.
This total was the highest of the tour, beating the 368 for five declared in the second innings against Queensland, and gave the Pakistanis a first innings lead of 110 over South Australia. It was also the first time, on the tour that the Pakistanis had headed their opponents on the first innings. At stumps, the touring captain, Hanif Mohammad, had scored an unbeaten 80 after batting for 138 minutes and hitting 10 fours. The Pakistanis got their 421 runs in 397 minutes. Best Partnership The opening stand between Ilyas and Naushad of 135 in 140 minutes was the best of the tour and generally the Pakistanis played most entertainingly to score at better than a run-a-minute. The 19-year-old Ilyas’s 154 was his highest in first-class cricket and his second century of the tour, beating his 126 against Queensland. His innings, which was chanceless, took 257 minutes and included 17 fours, the majority of which came from cover and straight drives and a well-timed back cut. Naushad, although dropped when 7, batted doggedly and proved himself a sound partner for Ilyas in his innings of 51 (140 minutes, four fours). Saeed Feeling 111 Saeed was suffering from a fever brought on by an infected throat, but with Ilyas
he provided one of the fastest partnerships of the innings. when they put on 96 in 92 minutes for the second wicket. Burki’s innings of 41 was as attractive as any played [during the day and he apjpeared unlucky to be given [out l.b.w. when he hit over a long hop, [ Hanif started .very slowly. |He took 17 minutes to score I his first run but later got into I his stride and hit some superlative cover drives to put on .55 in 43 minutes with Rana ifor the fifth wicket. Hanif reached his 50 in 102 minutes with five foul's and at stumps was batting so confidently that he looked certain to reach his century on Monday. .
