Tons Of Christmas Cakes And Pudding Being Sold
Any contrast between the ideal—a blaze in the hearth and snow outside—and the actual—sunburn and temperatures in the eighties—does not seem to lessen the appeal of Christmas cakes and puddings. This year has proved no exception, and since the festive fever set in, the demand in
Christchurch for them has been as great; if not greater, than usual.
A leading manufacturer of this fare reports that last year’s record sales have been exceeded appreciably. “With four more shopping days to go we could sell out at any time,” he said. His factory began making puddings and cakes at the beginning of September, and an even earlier start next year is indicated. A formidable quantity of rich food has been sold: 44 tons of cake, 20 tons of pudding 6J tons of fruit mince, plus an increased amount of puff pastry. Over the years, the recipe for their Christmas cake had remained the same, he said, and the firm dared not alter it—it had become quite sacred. However, improved wrapping and presentation had paid dividends.
One warehouse for a chain of grocery stores had found no decrease in the number of people making their own cakes and puddings, with sales of ingredients as good as ever. Another had received more orders from shops for the ready-made commodities —in fact, its stock had gone already. Excellent sales were experienced by a wholesale firm which had not carried these lines before. “This is the first time we have sold them, but it won’t be the last,” said the firm’s buyer. “We feel we have done better than last year,” said the manager of a large suburban foodmarket With the extra shopping days fewer people seemed to have decided to go on holiday at the weekend, and business was buoyant.
Several grocery stores also reported a steady demand.
