(N.Z.P.A.- Reuter—Copyright)
ROME, December 19.
The Italian Parliament tonight failed to elect a new President of the republic on the seventh secret ballot in four days.
An eighth ballot will be held tomorrow, Sunday.
The majority needed for election is 482 votes—half the
votes plus one of the total number of the Assembly. Professor Giovanni Leone, the former Premier and official Christian-Democrat candidate, obtained 313 votes—a gain of 35 votes compared with this morning’s sixth ballot.
Mr Giuseppe Saragat, the Social Democrat Foreign Minister, recovered five votes, to reach 138. The Communists continued to vote solidly for their own Senator, Mr Umberto Terracini, who polled 251 votes. The Neo-Fascist Italian Social Movement also went on voting for their own man, Mr Augusto de Marsanich, who obtained 40 votes.
