HOLIDAY HOURS

Late Shopping Nights

As Boxing Day falls on a Saturday the holiday will be observed on the following Monday, December 28. Retail shops will observe a late night on Thursday, December 24, and then close until the following Tuesday morning. They will have another late shopping night on Thursday, December 31, although some shopkeepers will be closing at 5.30 p.m. on that day, having found in the past that New Year’s Eve is a quiet time.

New Brighton shops will have Boxing Day as a late shopping night, and will be open on the day after New Year’s Day. Fresh bread will be available on December 24 and again on December 28. It will be delivered on Thursday, New Year’s Eve, and normal supplies will be resumed on Monday, January 4. Milkmen, as part of a 365-day-a-year industry, will be on the job every day; but they are asking customers to leave out cream orders well in advance and to advise when they will be away on holiday. Banks will be shut on Christmas Day and on the following Monday and Tuesday, but customers may have late banking facilities on Christmas Eve provided they arrange them with their own bank. At New Year, banks will be shut on New Year’s Day and the following Monday. Legal offices will shut next Wednesday and will reopen on January 14. During the holiday several solicitors will be on duty to appear for anyone charged in the Magistrate’s Court, where Justices of the Peace will sit during the legal holiday. For anyone who needs urgent medical or dental care during the holidays the St. John Ambulance Association will be able to supply the name of a doctor or dentist. The all-night dispensary will be open for prescriptions when chemists are closed. “The Press” will not be published on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.
