WANTS BAN ON TIPPING
“Iniquitous Habit”
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Dec. 18. Action by New Zealand to ban tipping would be welcomed by tourists, an Auckland city councillor, Mr E. C. Armishaw, said this evening. Mr Armishaw, who has returned from a trip to North and South America, said tipping was getting worse overseas.
“In American hotels porters won’t even touch your bags for anything under a dollar,” he said. “Tipping is an iniquitous habit. There is no need for it in this country where the standard of living is high. But it is gradually sneaking in and should be stamped out.” Mr Armishaw said New Zealand should adopt the Tahitian practice of placing no tipping signs at airports and in hotels.
New Zealanders and overseas tourists alike would appreciate being able to move freely through the country without being pestered by the need to tip.
