Hounsell 6-52 For Christchurch B.H.S.
The destroying agent In Christchurch Boys’ High School’s 10wicket win last year, A. R. Hounsell, again paved the way for his team’s first innings victory over Auckland Grammar School in the annual match which finished in Christchurch yesterday. Hounsell’s figures last year were 12 for 83; this year, in a single innings, he took six for 52. Auckland Grammar faced a stiff task when Christchurch declared at the overnight total of 284 for nine. R. J. Kaspar and W. L. Williams made a slow but useful start, although M. J. Hadlee, bowling leg-spinners, and V. A. Bishop, turning his off-
spinners sharply to a leg-trap, had the batsmen worried. But an hour before lunch Hounsell was brought back and bowled 10 hostile overs. The pitch gave him enough encouragement and Hounsell, pitching a little short of a length, had his deliveries rearing and kicking—spitefully at times. He took only two wickets before lunch but his fire must have had an unsettling effect for, after the adjournment, he bowled from the other end, pitched a fuller length and took four wickets for 22 from 14 overs. D. C. Ryan played a brave innings for Auckland, and battled on and on in spite of the knocks he was taking; finally he was caught in slips fending a lifter off his chest. R. C. Hooten stayed with Ryan during Hounsell’s most vicious spell and R. D. Whatman also made useful runs. The last two Auckland Grammar batsmen were together when the follow-on was avoided and in the murky light, Christchurch lost five wickets. Scores: CHRISTCHURCH B.H.S.
