RACE LAW QUASHED
Negro, White In Same Room (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Dec. 7. A Florida law which makes it a crime for a Negro and white of opposite sexes to occupy the same room at night habitually was struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court today. The Court described the law as “an exercise of the State police power which trenches upon the constitu-tionally-protected freedom from invidious official discrimination based on race.” The Court made no ruling on a State law banning marriages between Negroes and whites, which was also challenged. Florida is one of 19 states with such laws. Couples in mixed-race marriages are subject to 10 years’ prison and 1000-dollar fines. Today’s ruling was after an appeal by a Negro man and a white woman who were fined and gaoled by a Florida Court for cohabiting.
