Dunedin Puts Its Case For Games

(New Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, Dec. 8. Blueprints of Dunedin’s porting facilities are wing prepared tn expectation of the Commonwealth Games being held in the city. They will be presented 'to the Olympic and British Empire Games Association to support Dunedin’s application. When the plans were prepared it would then be seen what was required to bring facilities up to Commonwealth Games standard, Mr G. Thorn said today. He is a member of the steering committee formed more than four years ago to present Dunedin’s case. “Already we can compare

more than favourably with anywhere in New Zealand,” he said. “The Moana pool is one of the best in the Southern Hemisphere, the bowling greens are probably the best in New Zealand, and Lake Waihola, the best rowing course, is undergoing extensive development. “Indoor facilities for boxing, wrestling, fencing, and weight-lifting are first rate, with places like the War Memorial Gymnasium and the Town Hall. “For cyclists there is the Caledonian ground and the Taieri road course. lam sure the Otago Rugby Football Union would co-operate with Carisbrook for athletics if we got the Games.” Mr Thorn said accommodation for athletes could possibly be provided by university hostels. The new £600,000 hostel, expected to be built by 1969, would he a valuable asset if university units were used.

Detective Transferred.—Detective J. A. Howat, of the Christchurch Central Police Station, has been transferred to the Greymouth C. 1.8. He replaces Detective R. Bridge, who has been promoted to sergeant and transferred to Dunedin.
