Mantovani May Test Stayers At Pukekohe

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Nov. 27. Whether Mantovani is going to be one of the good distance runners of the summer should be shown in the £2OOO South Auckland Cup at Pukekohe tomorrow. If Mantovani carried his 94 successfully on the firm ground, and that seems probable, he will become one of the most discussed Auckland Cup entries. Mantovani raced well during the winter and he carried on his good form in the spring to win the Mitchelson Cup, at Ellerslie on October 3. Since he won the Mitchelson Cup Mantovani has gained a second over 11 furlongs at Ellerslie with 9-3, so his form has been sound. Next to Mantovani, Blue Heather has the best form background for the big race. She has 7-13, yet she is the heaviest weighted of the field ■ apart from the top-weight. Blue Heather is the tough six-year-old mare at her best going 11 furlongs, but it is questionable, too, whether she likes very hard ground. It was not until the autumn this year that she came back to form. Meanwhile, she has raced consistently well. Shakespeare (7-11) and Yardstick (7-10) are others with form that merit attention. Persian Star is a six-year-old with ability although his latest efforts have been disappointing. The South Auckland Cup will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The field for the second leg, the Paerata Handicap, looks better allround than the one for the cup. The most notable candidates are Rochdale, the topweight with 8-12, Hilldale Impresario and Joy’s Pride. Rochdale at best is a galloper of real class and he has an advantage over his rivals with No. 2 barrier position. The weather shows every promise of remaining fine, so the going should be fast.
