‘Determined To Destroy’
The .artist, Peter Mclntyre, said in Auckland this week that he believed he had completed his paintings of the New Zealand countryside “in the nick of time.”
“It is vanishing before our eyes,” he said. “It is disappearing just as fast as the bulldozers and planners can chew their way across the country. “New Zealanders seem determined to destroy their native heritage. It is -pot only happening on the power scheme on the Tongariro river, but all over the country.
“New Zealanders still have got a suburban notion about landscape. It may be the old pioneer spirit, but we want to try to turn everything into a suburb. “As far as politicians go, it is almost a professional disease. They call it ‘progress’ and think that word absolves them from destroying our land.” Mr Mclntyre said he thought the Nature Conservation Council should be “disbanded or sunk.” A new body with infinitely more power should be set up.
