Hurricane Hit Tonga Bananas
(NF. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Nov. 27.
A hurricane on Tuesday and Wednesday obliterated Tonga’s banana production and arrangements were in hand to ship further quantities of Australian bananas next week to ensure Christmas supplies, the general manager of Fruit Distributors (Mr C. R. Walker) said today. The hurricane struck the islands of Tonga, Tapu, and Haapai—the main source of banana production. Some of the fruit from the damaged trees might be saved but it will take a considerable time for the industry to recuperate.
