UNIVERSITY VACANCIES THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED , STUDIES RESEARCH FELLOW IN ENVIRONMENTAL ARCHAEOLOGY Th, Department of Anthropology and Sociology. Research School of Pacific Studies, seeks to fill a position in envorimnental archaeology as part of its programme of archaeological development. The Department concentrates its achaeologlcal field activities in Australia, New Guinea, and the Pacific Islands, especially Melanesia. Preference will be given to an applicant with geomorphological and pedological training, capable of applying thia to th, interpretation of the natural history of sites from which archaeological materials are recovered, especially in Australia and New Guinea. Application, from people with geological, paleontological or zoological qualifications and Interests in other aspects of environmental archaeology will, however. b« welcomed. Parallel research In geomorphology and vegetation history is conducted by the Department of Geography within the Research School of Pacific Studies. In addition, the University ti establishing its own radiocarbon dating unit. The salary of a Research Fellow is determined in the range £AI9SO-£26SO. Appointment is usually for three years with a possible extension to five years. Superannuation is on the F.S.S.U. pattern with supplementary benefits. The Department Is conducting research programmes in four fields: Australian political parties, pressure groups and electoral behaviour: public ad- . ministration and public policy; comparative government with special reference to the Soviet Union; and world politics with special reference to supranational organisation, deterrence and control, and Australian defence policy. For the present appointment preference will be given to scholars with research experience in the fields of Soviet Russian or Communist Chines, politics, government or administration. Applications from persons interested in the international relations and foreign policy of China will be considered; a successful applicant in this field may be offered appointment in the Department of International Relations in the Research School of Pacific Studies. Familiarity with source materials in original language(S) is essential. (There are extensive holdings In the University Librarry and the Australia National Library In Canberra, and reasonable provision is made for fieldwork). Applicants should indicate their particular research interests and intentions. Registrar. 3870 THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY -Invites applications for th, positions of LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER AND LECTURER IN AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING The Department of Aeronautical Engineering provide, courses lit Aerodynamics, Theory of Structures and Dynamics of Flight at the undergraduate level, and postgraduate courses tn these subjects are to be offered for the first time in 1965. One of the two positions Is connected with undergraduate courses In Aerodynamics and the other with courses in Aircraft Structures. Candidates for these positions should be honours graduates and, If successful, they will be expected to participate tn the research and post-graduate activities of the Department. University regulations allow members of staff to proceed to higher degrees. Salary for a Senior Lecturer Is within the range £2745 t £100—£3245 per annum; for a Lecturer within the range £1895 x £105—£2630 per annum, plus cost of living adjustment! (at present £42 p.a.).
