Research School of Pacific Studies, seeks to fill a position in envorimnental archaeology as part of its programme of archaeological development. The Department concentrates its achaeologlcal field activities in Australia, New Guinea, and the Pacific Islands, especially Melanesia. Preference will be given to an applicant with geomorphological and pedological training, capable of applying thia to th, interpretation of the natural history of sites from which archaeological materials are recovered, especially in Australia and New Guinea. Application, from people with geological, paleontological or zoological qualifications and Interests in other aspects of environmental archaeology will, however. b« welcomed. The Department Is conducting research programmes in four fields: Australian political parties, pressure groups and electoral behaviour: public ad- . ministration and public policy; comparative government with special reference to the Soviet Union; and world politics with special reference to supranational organisation, deterrence and control, and Australian defence policy. For the present appointment preference will be given to scholars with research experience in the fields of Soviet Russian or Communist Chines, politics, government or administration. Applications from persons interested in the international relations and foreign policy of China will be considered; a successful applicant in this field may be offered appointment in the Department of International Relations in the Research School of Pacific Studies. Familiarity with source materials in original language(S) is essential. (There are extensive holdings In the University Librarry and the Australia National Library In Canberra, and reasonable provision is made for fieldwork).
