CARDIOLOGY GROUP
Post For Sir James Hay
Sir James Hay has accepted an invitation to become a councillor of the lay committee of the International Cardiology Foundation. He is believed to be the first New Zealander to be invited to join the foundation. The foundation, a lay organisation, was formed in Chicago in 1957 to aid the International Society of Cardiology, a medical organisation, in the stimulation of cardiovascular research.
In general, the foundation works through national heart foundations, but as yet there are no proposals for the establishment of a national foundation in New Zealand. The foundation raises money for such purposes as supporting the travel of cardiologists to international conferences. It recently initiated a major
award, the gold stethoscope award, for research in the cardio-vascular field, and the first recipient was the cardiologist primarily responsible for its formation, Dr. P. D. White. Three other cardiologists—a Briton, a Frenchman, and a Russian—will receive the award at a fundraising dinner to be held in Paris next month.
Sir James Hay’s son, Dr. D. R. Hay. is a member of the New Zealand committee of the Australia and New Zealand Cardiac Society.
