BARBER FOR DARFIELD
Saturday Work
Allowed
“It is desirable that this service should be provided to the people of Darfleld, as it is not being provided at present,” the Shops and Offices Exemptions Tribunal (Mr H. G. Thompson, S.M.), said when he granted an application yesterday, made by Malcolm Reed Pepper, to open a male hairdressing shop at Darfleld on Saturdays. The applicant, for whom Mr B. S. McLaughlin appeared, requested exemption from sectton 22 of the Marlborough, Nelson, Westland and Canterbury Male Hairdressers and Tobacconists’ Assistants’ Award, prohibiting opening on Saturdays. Mr H. W. Thompson, who appeared for the Amalgamated Shop Assistants and Related Unions,' opposed the application. There was no male hairdresser at Darfleld and with, a population of about 700 people, there was a sufficient demand for such a service, Mr McLaughlin said. The applicant, who had a business in Christchurch during the week, was only interested in cutting hair beween 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., and did not intend to sell cigarettes or tobacco, he said. In opposing the application, Mr Thompson said the township was not a holiday resort, to which exemptions of this kind usually applied, and the granting of the application would create a precedent “This would be purely a secondary occupation for the applicant,” he said. “If a service can be rendered to the public, which otherwise would not be available ,then the application is proper, and its granting is justified,” the Tribunal said.
