The Future
Harbour development is a continuing task as trade expands.
As well as building its eastern extension, the Lyttelton Harbour Board in recent years has opened the elevated roadway giving road access to the inner harbour wharves over the railway lines.
Once it has completed the eastern extension work, the labour force will move into the inner harbour, with No. 7 wharf being the first project to be tackled.
Modernisation of the inner harbour has had legislative approval, and the scheme is estimated to cost £2.5 million.
Work will begin in a week or two on preparations for the roll on-roll off interisland steamer express to be put on the run by the Union Steam Ship Company.
Then the board has plans to provide for all-weather loading of meat.
