Opening Ceremony
The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) and Lady Fergusson will fly to Christchurch today for the official opening of the harbour extension.
When Their Excellencies arrive at Lyttelton they will be taken from the inner harbour to the new breastwork by the tug Lyttelton I. Their arrival at 2.30 p.m. will be heralded by a fanfare of trumpets.
Lady Fergusson will be presented with a bouquet by Miss Diana Sutton, the daughter of the deputy-chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr F. I. Sutton).
The chairman (Mr A. A. Macfarlane) will give an address, and he will be followed by the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine), who will represent the Government. The Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) will dedicate the new work. His. Excellency will then make a speech. Mr Sutton will present His Excellency with a painting of a nautical scene by Austen Deans; and His Excellency will then unveil a plaque and declare the new works open.
The Lyttelton Marine Band will play at the ceremony.
Afternoon tea will be served to guests in the new transit shed.
