WAVE RISK REMAINS
Danger On Beaches
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND, Nov. 27.
The public should stay away from beaches until there is no possibility of a tidal wave from Raoul Island, the Auckland Regional Commissioner for Civil Defence (Captain L. P. Bourke) said today. He said the position was still the same. “We don’t know whether an eruption on Raoul will set off a seismic wave.
“But these waves, which are really shock waves, can travel at speeds of up to 300 m.p.h. and reach heights of 20 feet.
“They can cause considerable damage and persons on a beach could be dragged out to sea by them.” If such a wave approached Auckland the sirens of the Auckland Harbour Board, of ships in port and the fire brigade would be used as a warning.
