SAT UNTIL 3 A.M.

Parliament In Happy Mood

(Parliamentary Reporter)

WELLINGTON, Nov. 27. In marked contrast to their mood of three weeks ago, members of Parliament jocularly pushed on with legislation until 3.25 a.m. today. After the Reserve Bank Bill had been put through the committee stages about 2 a.m. the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said he thought the House might as well complete consideration of eight other measures. The Opposition raised no protest at this and apart from a division forced by two Government back-benchers over the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill, proceedings were completed with a minimum of delay. The two back-bench dissidents, Mr G. F. Sim (Waipa) and Mr A. McCready (Otaki), called for a division at 3 a.m. over the clause permitting unions to establish welfare funds. They sought contributions on a voluntary basis, not. compulsorily after a decision by a special union meeting. Other Government members and the Opposition voted against the amendment which was lost 63-2.
