Fifteen Calls To Fires

An 18-year-old youth, Robert Alston, suffered slight burns to both hands when filling a cigarette lighter in his home at 123 Francis avenue last evening. The container of fluid apparently caught fire. St. Albans station firemen were called at 6.16 p.m., but the fire, which caused slight damage to the room, had been put out when they arrived.

The Christchurch ■ Fire Brigade received calls to 14 other fires, making it the busiest period the brigade has had for weeks. At 6.47 ajn.. Sockburn and Sydenham firemen were called to a fire in a sulphur heap at the premises of Kempthorne Prosser, Ltd., Main South road. Sockburn were again called to a fire in the stockpile at 6.9 p.m. No damage was done to property. A grass fire on the property of Mr I. Watts, 12 Middlepark road, at 7.50 a.m. caused no damage. Firemen from Sockburn and Headquarters stations attended.

A small fire in the outside wall of a house occupied by Mr D. B. Cromb, 487 Halswell road, was attended to by Sockburn and Sydenham firemen at 11.15 a.m. The fire caused only slight damage.

Fire caused slight damage to a hedge on the property of Mr I. S. Nicholls, 53 Te Awakura terrace, at 12.33 p.m. Woolston firemen attended. Fire- In Car A fire in the back seat of a car parked in Cambridge terrace near the Edmonds band rotunda was put out by Headquarters station firemen at 1.26 p.m. The car, owned by Mr B. R. Shanks, was only slightly damaged. A grass fire at Corsair Bay at 3.15 p.m. caused no damage. Lyttelton firemen put it out. Another grass fire, in an empty section at the rear of 140 Sawyers Arms road, wasput out by St. Albans fire-; men at 3.58 p.m. At 4.8 p.m., the back of a Post Office truck caught fire near the corner of Riccarton and Waimairi roads. Only slight damage was caused. Sockburn firemen answered the alarm.

Fire caused slight damage to a lean-to shed on the property of Mr R. Warn, 25 Westcott street, at 4.27 p.m. St Albans and Headquarters station firemen answered the alarm.

A small fire in the painting booth at Suttons Industries, Ltd., 1 Normans road, caused minor damage at 4.49 p.m. Headquarters station and St. Albans firemen attended.
