Supreme Court SIX CHARGES ADMITTED

Three Go To Trial Ronald James Thornton, aged 28, a workman, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court yesterday to six charges of false pretences and not guilty to three charges of false pretences. Each charge related to repairs to chimneys. Mr Justice Macarthur was on the bench. Mr C. M. Roper appeared for the Crown, and Mr A. Hearn for Thornton. Thornton pleaded guilty to obtaining by means of a false pretence £24 10s on May 22 from Mabel Le Comte, of 51 Montreal street; £5O 7s 6d on May 26 from Ivy May Ashworth, of 48 Braddon street; £l5 7s 6d on May 28 from Ronald Fraser, of 21 Montreal street; £l9 15s on June 4 from Reuben Charles Thomas, of 27 Mandeville street; £2l 17s 6d on June 8 from Elsie Gallop, of 50 Berwick street; and £lB 5s on June 11 from Rose Gladys Gasson, of 101 Brougham street. He pleaded not guilty to charges of obtaining by means of a false pretence £lO 15s on May 28 from Dorothy Walker, of 19 Montreal street; £l6 10s on June 9 from Olive Henrietta Lord, of 28 Hillview street; and £l2 on June 9 from Flossie Irene Day, of 24 Hillview street. His Honour convicted Thornton on the charges to which he pleaded guilty and remanded him in custody for sentence. The trial on the charges to which Thornton pleaded not guilty was adjourned till today.

Decision Reserved

Mr Justice Wilson reserved his decision in the Supreme Court yesterday on an appeal by Leslie Bell Timpson (Mr B. A. Barrer) against a decision in the Magistrate’s Court at Christchurch on September 17. In the Magistrate’s Court Timpson unsuccessfully sougth £59 Is 6d from the North Canterbury Nassella Tussock Board (Mr P. T. Mahon) as payment for “country work” within the meaning of the current award at that time—the New Zealand local bodies (rural section) labourers’ award. Timpson had been employed grubbing tussock from April 22 till September 6, 1963.

Decrees Nisi Granted

Mr Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court yesterday granted decrees nisi in divorce in the following undefended actions:— Desertion. Georgia Lily McLaughlin (Mr D. H. Stringer) v. John Patrick McLaughlin. Separation Agreement. Ngaire Shirley Anderson (Mr G. R. Lascelles) v. Walter Anderson; Shirley Phillips (Mr J. R. Woodward) v. Donald Hairy Phillips; Gilbert Ernest Arnold (Mr M. G. L. Loughnan) v. Elena Arnold (Mr I. A. Pringle).
