LORDSHIP’S STIFF ASSIGNMENT

Another Win Possible On Final Night

Lordship’s sprinting ability could carry him to his third win in eight days when he contests the Ollivier Handicap, the first leg of the double on the final night of the cup meeting at Addington Raceway tomorrow. Lordship will be set a difficult assignment from 36 yards, but the task should not be impossible if he races with the dash that has marked his wins in the New Zealand Free-for-all and the Allan Matson Stakes.

Lordship’s win over 12 furlongs on Wednesday was much more convincing than the official margin of half a neck would suggest. It was late before he worked clear to challenge and at the finish he had Orbiter well covered. He will have to pass 13 rivals to win this race, but if he receives a reasonable run, he should be capable of beating most of them.

Orbiter’s three seconds so far at the meeting entitle him to serious consideration. His efforts have in some ways deserved a better fate. He has had to work hard in all of them and it is possible the effects of such racing could be starting to take their toll. Orbiter is a splendid sprinter, as he showed when he won the Hannon Memorial at Oamaru last month. Then he finished second to Lordship in the New Zealand Free-for-all. If he receives a favourable run, he could gain a deserved win. Vanderford, too. deserves a win. He was the unlucky runner in the Allan Matson Stakes on Wednesday, working clear when the race was virtually over. He had a comparatively easy race and looks to have come through the meeting in great heart. He has drawn No. 1 on 12 yards, and, if he begins with his usual alacrity, he could be in the trailing position before the end of a furlong. Unfortunately he has drawn behind an erratic beginner in Gay Reel and he might have to go round her. Deft could be the pick of the horses on the front. She has not raced since she finished unplaced in the New Zealand Cup. Deft might not be quite as weary as some of her rivals which have had three hard races since November 10. She was runnerup to Orbiter at Oamaru last month and now meets that runner on 12 yards more

3 favourable terms. If she rei ceives a suitable run, she s could upset calculations. > Gay Robin, Junior Royal ! and Van Rebeck are three 1 other form runners on the ! limit capable of adding in- ; terest to the finish, but they • should be held safely by Lordship, Orbiter and VanderI ford. i ■ Second Leg > Queen’s Cord should ex- [ tend her fine record at the ; meeting with a win in the I second leg, the Greyhound Handicap. She was second in ; the Dominion Handicap and ’ won the New Zealand Troti ting Free-for-all on Wednes- - day. She again comes in on ; the limit and as she is in • such fine form at present she I must be given a great chance i of further success. Harbour Light came home ! gamely for second to Queen’s i Cord on Wednesday, while I she was runner-up to Flami ing Way on the first day. . She has to give Queen’s Cord i a start of 18 yards and that i might not be enough to keep ■ her out of the finish once more. : Flaming Way has had two • wins and a third so far at • the meeting. He did not re- ’ ceive a good run in the free- : for-all on Wednesday and • there was merit in his placI ing. His chances of winning • cannot be as bright as on • the first two days of the meet- : ing, but he should be cap- ; able of making another bold i showing.

A fresh horse in Robert Medoro is one of the best horses of his gait in commission. He is seldom guilty of trotting a bad race and if seasoned enough, he could be prominent. Mighty Hanover, Flying Maiden, Snow Globe and a newcomer to this class in Asia Minor as others entitled to consideration. Fine weather is forecast and the track will be in splendid order.
