CANOE RACE ON AVON
Raising Funds For Lifeboat Fifty canoes will race on the Avon river from Deans Bush to the South Brighton Domain, a parachutist will plummet into the Estuary and an aircraft will race a speedboat in a carnival to be held at Pleasant Point on Saturday week. The carnival is being organised by the RiccartonHornby Jaycees to raise funds for a new lifeboat for the Sumner Lifeboat Institute. The lifeboat, Rescue 11, will take part in the carnival. There will be water ski-ing, with a kite ski, speedboat racing, a Bailey bridge display by the Army, police dogs demonstration and a jet-boat display. A fast hydroplane from the New Brighton Power Boat Club will race an aircraft in a burst across the Estuary, and there will be speedboat races. The 50 canoes will carry the colours of Christchurch business houses. They will be started by the Mayor of Riccarton (Mr E. J. Bradshaw) and will be greeted at South Brighton by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning).
