University Club Will Play In Four Countries
The most ambitious Rugby tour ever made by a New Zealand club will begin on December 15 when the Canterbury University team leaves to play matches in Hawaii, Japan, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
The club also had been asked to play in Bangkok but as the invitation arrived after the tour arrangements had been finalised it had to be refused. The itinerary announced yesterday is:— December 16, v. Hawaii Harlequins, at Honolulu; 20, v. All Doshida, at Osaka; 22, v. Poyata Motors, at Nagoya; 24, v. Yawata Steel, at Tokyo; 27, v. All Waseda, at Tokyo; 31, v. AU Meijl, at Tokyo. January 3, v. All Keio, at Tokyo; 6, v. Hong Kong XV,
at Hong Kong; 9, v. Hong Kong XV; 13, v. Malaysian XV. The trip, which will cost about £6OOO, has been financed by the 24 players who have been chosen for the team. Most of the players have come from the club’s two senior teams but the slectors also have included several junior players. Two of the club’s All Blacks, J. N. Creighton and R. C. Moreton, were not available for the trip. The team includes 10 play-
ers who have played firstclass Rugby. It is:—D. C. Leary, R. Smith, B. M. P. Weenink, N. J. O’Brien, P. A. Carter, D. Nottage, P. A. Hutchinson, N. Keenan, A. F. Orme, R. Austin, L. S. Taiaroa, R. Sommerville, P. J. Hogg, P. W. Lee, L. M. O’Reilly, D. D. Wilson, A. Mathewson, T. K. McDonald, M. C. Meikle, D. C. Brooker, A. Bowes, P. J. Morgan, C. R. Hockley (captain). Mr T. H. Moynihan, the present captain of the club's senior team, will manage the side.
