Yachtsmen Forming Dragon Class

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 19. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron is shortly to call a meeting of yachtsmen interested in forming an Olympic Dragon class movement. The Dragon has been in the Olympic Games since 1948.

However, New Zealand has not seen a Dragon since 1956 when R. L. Stewart, the Auckland keeler skipper and yacht designer, finished twelfth in the Dragon class at the Olympic Games in Melbourne. A Dragon class yacht bought in Tokyo by the manager of the New Zealand yachting team, Mr D. St. Clair Brown, is being shipped to Australia to await import into New Zealand. One yachtsman, the 18-footer skipper, R. C. Stone, has already decided to have a Dragon built for the 1965-66 season. The Dragon is 29ft 3in long overall, 18ft Bin on the waterline, has a beam of 6ft 4in, a draught of 3ft Ilin, a sail area of 236 sq ft and a light displacement hull with an iron keel weighing 22051 b. One prominent yachtsman said today that he was confident of at least six Dragons being ready in Auckland for the 1965-66 season.
