PROVINCIAL BUILDINGS
Courts May Need Space There was a distinct possibility that the Justice Department might need some temporary accommodation in the wooden part of the Canterbury Provincial Buildings when they are vacated by the Department of Agriculture in 18 months’ time, said Mr D. C. Duff, South Island representative of the State Services Commission, yesterday. Mr Duff said the Department of Agriculture would be in its present quarters for at least another 18 months. Eventually it will move into its own new building in Victoria street. Mr Duff said the Justice Department might then require accommodation if its new court buildings were to be started. The Provincial Council Buildings are controlled by a committee appointed by the Canterbury Provincial Buildings Board. The committee plans an “open day” to foster interest in the old buildings during the Pan Pacific Arts Festival. One of the events of the festival, the York Cycle of Mystery Plays is to be presented on the lawn between the buildings and the river, with the audience on the opposite bank.
