OPOSSUMS IN CITIES
Released In Hagley Park (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 17. Opossums are not new invaders in the four main cities. They were released in the environs more than 60 years ago, Mr L. T. Pracy, an authority on the history of opossum liberation, said today. He was commenting on an Auckland message which said opossums were invading cities in ever-increasing numbers. Mr Pracy said there had been opossum damage in the four main cities over the last 30 to 40 years. “It is around 60 to 70 years since opossums were released in the environs of the main cities. In Wellington opossums were liberated at the request of the Cabinet in Government House grounds in 1898.
“Hagley Park, Christchurch, was the scene of a liberation in 1900. Three releases were made in Dunedin between 1890-92.
