Preview Of New Roses At Society’s Show

A preview of roses to be released in 1966 was given to the public at the Canterbury Horticultural Society's rose show which opened in the society’s hall yesterday afternoon.

The roses were exhibited by Avenue Nurseries of Levin. The new roses included several in the pink range. The lightest colour was Pernille Poulsen, a deeper shade was Sea Shell with McCredy’s Queen the darkest. Others were Western Sun—gold with red, Flashlight—orange with red and Austin—gold with cerise and plain cerise. The exhibit designed to catch the eye was flanked by a model of a Maori pa doorway and was attended by two girls in Maori dress.

Taking place of honour with Tiki—a rose named by Sam McCredy in Wellington last year and shown in Christchurch last November, was the coral pink rose named after the Queen Mother, Elizabeth of Glamis and the only rose to win all the awards in one year in England.

Until recently there was no rose named Rose of Tralee. Now a deep pink rose has been given this title. This attractive rose is described as frisky and strong in growth. Large roses with little perfume are no longer enjoying popularity. The trend is to smaller roses with definite perfume. Entries at 856 were 283 down on last year. This W’as the result of the dry mild winter and an increase in aphides and blight. However, judges agreed the growers should be congratulated on their production of such fine blooms.

Mr G. N. Shelton, the judge of the open roses, said growers had done a marvellous job to produce the clean fresh blooms on display. Cut blooms according to the judges, Messrs E. Taylor and L. A. Bennett were rather better than usual. The proteas were outstanding and one shown by E. G. Collett was described as “almost perfection.” The premier award for the best bloom in the show was given to Stella, a shaded pink rose shown by Dr D. M. Mcllroy.
