TROTTING LORDSHIP HAS SECOND WIN

Beat Orbiter In

Close Finish

Lordship gained his second win at the meeting when he caught Orbiter about 25 yards from the finish and won the Allan Matson Stakes at Addington Raceway last night. Lordship was a dominating favourite ad he paid £1 17s for a win and £1 5s 6d for a place.

Lordship was cheered home by an enthusiastic crowd and received a great reception as he was brought back to the birdcage by his driver, D. D. Nyhan.

Lordship’s host of supporters were dismayed when he bounded at the start and tangled for a few strides. However, he caught his gait quickly and was seventh when the field settled down.

He moved into fifth position, about four lengths from the leader, at the half-mile, but then became rather awkwardly placed. He was third, on the inside of Junior Royal, at the straight entrance and had to wait for an opening, which did not come until inside the furlong. He took this rapidly and soon inched up to Orbiter, which had looked the likely winner at the furlong.

The slowish pace set first by Flying Blue and then by Oreti precluded any chance of Caduceus’s record of 3min 4 2-ssec for 12 furlongs being broken. Lordship recorded 3min 7sec.

Lordship's win was his twenty-fifth and he has now won £27,555 in stakes. As well as his win last night, he was successful in the New Zealand Free-for-all and third in the New Zealand Cup.

Orbiter recorded his third second placing at the meeting. He was forced wide when he tried to improve in the back straight and he fought on gamely in the straight There was merit in his effort, as also there was in the third placing of Vanderford, which experienced considerable difficulty working clear until about 75 yards from the finish.
