NO POLIO IMMUNITY
One In Four Under Three
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 18.
One in every four children under three years tested has no immunity to poliomyelitis, according to preliminary results from a survey by the National Health Institute. “These results seems to confirm the theory that once the fear of poliomyelitis is removed the public tends to forget the vital importance of immunisation,” the institute’s virologist, Dr. W. Hamilton, said today. “The viruses which cause the disease seem to have dis-
appeared in the rest of the community. “No case of the disease has occurred in New Zealand since the mass immunisation.”
It was only too true that mothers of young children were inclined today to postpone the children’s polio immunisation, the Medical Officer of Health for Wellington, Dr. E. Dowden, said. He urged mothers to take their babies for the first dose of oral vaccine at six months of age and to follow this within the next few months with two booster doses.
