Move To Form Family Life Education Council
The formation of a Family Life Education Council for Canterbury is being planned, according to a circular printed by the Christchurch Parents’ Centre. Many individuals and organisations in Christchurch were working for the good of the family in some particular aspect, but for the fullest enrichment of family living, education must embrace the whole of family life and a Family Life Education Council would serve this purpose, states the circular. Such a council could ascertain the extent of existing services, co-ordinate the activities and resources of kindred organisations to solve mutual problems, and plan for the extension or addition of much needed services. The inclusion of a course within the secondary school curriculum on education for family life is one aim suggested as an example. A council had already been formed in Wellington (with the support of more than 30
organisations), and one was in the process of being formed in Auckland. It was expected that these regional councils would later set up a national council. The Parents’ Centre has arranged a meeting in the Chamber of Commerce Hall on November 26 at 8 p.m., and has invited interested parties and representatives of organisations to attend to put forward their ideas. “The significance of the ‘good’ family as an educational and social force can never be over-estimated,” quotes the circular. “Its value accrues to the individual, the family itself, the nation, and the world.”
