Fijians On Hotel Staff

These five Fijians who are spending three months on the staff at the Lodge Hotel, Hanmer Springs, have introduced a certain tropical air to the small North Canterbury township with their gaily-coloured stilus and soft island music. Their stay at Hanmer Springs was arranged by the proprietor of the hotel, Mr J. H. Booth, of Christchurch, who is also the proprietor of

the Reef Lodge Hotel, Fiji. While the Fijians are in New Zealand, several members of the Hanmer Springs staff are working in his Fijian hotel. He said yesterday that he hoped to make the exchange of staff a permanent feature. It could provide valuable experience, he said. The Fijians work mainly as barmen and stewards, but possess a natural love of music and whenever they can

get the opportunity strum island tunes on the hotel's electronic guitars—sessions that prove particularly popular with guests. For most of the time, the Fijians wear their gay sulus. The Fijians are. from left, Timoci Salaca. Sakiusa Nawakai, Wilson Emberson, Mesake Lalai, and Maika Driu. They will return to Fiji in January.
